Could not open printer. Check your printer selection, when printing from ReckonAccounts 2013.
ID: 4730 Category: Accounts - Personal Range (previously Quicken) Status: Resolved Views: 867

Question:

Why can’t I print from my new Reckon Accounts 2013?  Every time I try to print I get the error “Could not open printer. Check your printer selection.”  I have no problems printing from any other device.

Solution:

Users who upgrade an existing Quicken installation on this PC to ReckonAccounts 2013 are likely to experience this problem.

Although the Quicken installation is uninstalled, the Quicken PDF Printer remains.  When ReckonAccounts 2013 is installed a new printer, Reckon PDF Printer, is installed.  By default both printers are assigned to the same port – LPT1 – and are in conflict.

Workaround

Simple:  Assign the Quicken PDF Printer to a separate port and delete it.

1.    Close ReckonAccounts 2013;

2.    Start > Printers & Devices;

3.    Right-click the Reckon PDF Printer and select See what’s printing;

4.    Delete any items in the printer queue and close the window;

5.    Right-click the Reckon PDF Printer and select Printer Properties and the Ports tab;

6.    In the box LPT1, you will see Reckon PDF Printer and Quicken PDF Printer appear in the Printer column;

7.    click the Add Port button.

8.     Select Local Port and click the New Port button;

9.     Enter Quicken in the Enter a port name field, click OK, and then click Close.

10.  Be sure that the NUL port is selected in the Ports list and click Apply.

11. Close all applications

12. In Printers & Devices, delete the Quicken PDF Printer.

13. Close all windows and programs and reboot the PC.

You should now be able to print.
